How do you know which Phase your child is working within?

Please see the communication from your child's teacher to see which Phase your child is working on in school.  If you are unable to speak to their teacher, look at their letters and sounds reading book.  This will have the phase on it.  We always send home a book which is the right level for your child.

The age related expectations for a child is in the Phonics Milestones document that will give you an indication of where a child should be.  Please see the document at the bottom of the page for more information.

Be aware that if your child is working on a particular Phase but they find the games challenging we recommend playing games in that phase and in the ones below.  Our aim is for every child to become a fluent reader and for every child to enjoy reading.  It is very important that your child feels confident applying their phonic skills to help them to read.  By playing games in earlier Phases you are reminding your child of their achievements.  Through practice in school and at home they will soon be able to play games in the Phase they are working on in class.  If your child finds a game challenging please play it yourself with them and model how you segment a word and how you blend the word.  By doing this you will be reinforcing the skills your child needs to use to be able to play the game.

On the Phonics Page there is a link to the Phonics Milestones which will show you where a child is expected to be working in each year group.  Please be aware that all children work at different paces and through high quality teaching and support at home our aim at Emmaus is for your child to become a fluent reader.

If you have any questions please speak to your child's teacher.
