Swimming is an important life skill. In addition it is a highly beneficial activity for acquiring an increased vocabulary of movement skills, for health and enjoyment.
Confidence gained through learning to swim gives access to many other water-based recreational activities.
The number of year 6 pupils leaving primary school able to swim at least 25 metres has increased from 40% in 2006 to 88% in 2013 in Liverpool.
This has been achieved by a concerted commitment to swimming from primary schools and the provision of a centrally co-ordinated swimming, including the two week “top up” programme during the summer term.
KS 2 children will take part in swimming lessons in the spring term.
