Year 1 had a wonderful morning exploring St Cuthbert’s Church as part of our RE learning about churches and Christian worship. The children were warmly welcomed by Reverend Kate and Janet, a friendly parishioner who helps to look after the church.
During our visit, the children enjoyed a guided tour and took part in lots of hands‑on discovery. They searched carefully for important objects around the church such as the lectern, crosses, candles, the altar and the font. The children loved spotting these special items and learning what each one is used for.
One of the highlights was trying on a real stole — the colourful scarf worn by the vicar. The children were fascinated to learn how different colours are used at different times of the church year.
We also gathered together to sing the hymn ‘Our God Is a Great Big God’, filling the church with happy voices and lots of enthusiasm.
The children asked thoughtful questions about the beautiful stained‑glass window, especially the one showing The Road to Emmaus. They were excited to recognise this story because it links so closely to our own school name and mission of journeying with friends as we learn and love together.
It was a joyful, meaningful visit where the children showed curiosity, respect and a real sense of wonder.
A huge thank you to Reverend Kate and Janet for welcoming us so wonderfully.
