Crystallising honey experiment

Beeswax candles

Year 3 had a fascinating science lesson learning about all the products made by bees. We used beeswax sheets and cotton cord to roll our own candles which we can burn at home. This Bee Project is amazing!

Year 3 have been reading tongue twisters this week. It took a while to get our tongues around the words, but we had a good go at reading The Flea and the Fly.

Illustrator Laura Kate, second visit to 3W. In our second session with Laura, we used the characters that we created last session and made our own zines. We then focused on one double spread and blew it up on the A3 card adding in lots of details.

Geography/Computing - VR headsets - this term we have been learning all about volcanoes, and this week we were lucky enough to explore them as if we were there using VR headsets.

Summer 1 - sculpture- this term we have been creating our own sculptures in the style of Anthony Gormley is The Field and Another Place Iron Men on Crosby Beach

For our DT in the spring term year 3 researched, designed, made and evaluated their very own vegetable soup. They tasted a variety of different vegetables to see which ones they liked, commenting on their texture, taste and colour. They also learnt some invaluable knife skills.

We have been identifying and naming the properties of 3D shapes today. We counted the faces, vertices and edges of each of the shapes and even made nets of them.

Maths - sorting events according to time

We have been working in Science and PSHE to find out more about balanced diets. Today we looked at nutrition labels to help us make informed choices.

Year 3 used playdough to demonstrate how high temperature and pressure can change sedimentary rock into metamorphic rock.

We are learning about igneous rocks in science. We cooled a solution of Epsom salts and water at different speeds to see if it had any effect on the size of crystals....and it did! The faster it cooled, the smaller the crystals. You could try this at home!

World Museum Trip - Discovering Ancient Egypt

The children took on the role of archaeologists and learned the correct handling techniques for touching ancient objects. They explored different artefacts from the following areas:

  • Gods and their symbols - how to recognise some of the Egyptian gods.
  • Materials - what the artefacts are made from and how they were used.
  • Mummification – what they can learn from an examination of a mummified cat and a mummy crocodile? How can archaeologists learn about them without damaging them by unwrapping them?
  • Egyptian writing - examine hieroglyphics ,ancient Egyptian writing, on a piece of mummy bandage.

During the workshop the children were taken through the various stages of the embalming process including; washing the body, removing organs, stuffing the body, replacing eyes with artificial ones and carefully placing amulets between layers of bandages.

Wind and insect pollination

Seed dispersal investigation - we created our own seed which could be dispersed by the wind, and measured how far and fast they travelled.

Our first attempt with the glockenspiels in Y3. This was at practice speed - we hope to add a more polished version in the coming weeks!
