Dear families, we are delighted to tell you that after an end of term assessment every child in Reception has made progress with their reading skills.  We are so proud of all the children.  These links are there for you to support your child and are completely optional.  We just want to make sure everyone has what they need to support your child.  They can be used for about 8 weeks so you can choose to use them when it is convenient. To build fluency we read and read and read the 1.5 words until we do not need to use Fred Talk.  We then start to read them with Fred in your Head skills – where we say it in our heads not out loud and we blend it silently.  Then we read them speedily, we look at them and our brain automatically uses the phonic skills we know and we read the word.  Please practice the 1.5 words and read them over and over again. 

 

We are now reading the ditty sheets and you will have received a letter about the ditty sheets.  We are using our Fred Talk skills to read the short sentences and talk about the ditty.  We read 10 ditties before we move onto the Red Ditty Books.  Please practice reading the ditty sheets we are sending home each Friday.

We have also been reading 1.6 and 1.7 words with increasing fluency.  We are working towards the children reading them without having to use Fred Talk or Fred in your Head.  We call this speedy reading.  To move on to higher than Purple storybooks the children have to be able to read a group of words speedily, without Fred Talk or Fred in your head.  We teach them to do this by practising reading the words over and over again.  The words we learn are in the back of each storybook and are called Speedy Green Words. 

 

Please practice reading your 1.7 words as speedily as you can.  Each time you read them you will probably get speedier and speedier.
