TOPIC LETTER YEAR 4 JANUARY 2016
6th January 2016
Dear Parents,
We hope you had a lovely Christmas. Below is a general outline of the work to be covered this half term.
As a partner in your child’s learning you may help by taking her or him to the library or supporting this programme of work in other ways. If you have any books, articles, artefacts or any other materials which you think are relevant to support the learning experience of your child and the class, we would be very pleased to hear from you.
English
We will be reading stories from other cultures. We will explore the texts using drama and use our speaking and listening skills to hot seat characters. We will then become authors as we write our story set in a different country. We will focus particularly on using connectives to move time on in stories such as early the next morning, later that day, a little later, shortly after that or meanwhile.
Maths
We will continue to have a very important times table focus. In a recent news item the Government indicated that children in Year 6 may be having a statutory times table test. We will begin again at the 2 times and then continue up the tables as we did last term. We will test the children every Friday. Please see list below for which tables you should practise with your child each week.

Constant revision of all times tables will help your child in all areas of maths. Mental maths will be practised daily and incorporated into the numeracy lesson to help children develop quick calculation skills.
Our main topic in maths will be:
Week 1 – Division
Week 2 – Measurement Perimeter and Area
Week 3 – Convert between different units of measure
Week 4 – Time
Week 5 – Ordering measures and converting time
Week 6 – Time Problems, Addition and Subtraction
Science
In Science we will be looking at animals including humans. This will cover the simple functions of the digestive system, different types of teeth and food chains. We will be encouraging the correct use of scientific vocabulary where possible.
Geography and Art
Our topic for the term will be Rainforests. We will explore where they are and who lives in rainforests (including animals, plants and indigenous people). We will look at the artwork of Henri Rousseau and explore some of his most famous works portraying rainforests and explore his style and the features of his paintings before creating our own Rousseau inspired rainforest scene.
