Read Write Inc Phonics Homework
This week we are sending home words in your child’s bag for them to practice reading with you. We have been learning to read these words using our Fred Talk skills.
We encourage the children to Fred Talk, Read the Word. They say the sounds one at a time and blend them to read the word. Please show the words to your child one at a time. Encourage them to “Fred Talk, Read the Word.” In school we model this and then ask them to copy. Once they are confident they can read the word without you doing it first.

What is Fred Talk? Fred talk helps children read unfamiliar words by pronouncing each sound in the word one at a time. Children can start blending sounds into words as soon as they know a small group of letters well. During lessons children are taught to hear sounds and blend them together in sequence to make a word.

First practice reading them using Fred Talk, Read the word.
If they can do this then move onto Fred in your Head, Read the word. (They do not say the sounds out loud but say them in their heads as you point to each letter). They then read the word.
To read books fluently their RWI target is to read these words speedily – “Speedy reading.” So they look at them and say the word. This is when their phonic skills enable them to read the word very speedily.
