This week is the last week of school before we break up for the summer holidays! As always, have a try with the tasks below, either on Purple Mash, BBC Bitesize or White Rose Maths. This week they link to capacity and to graph reading (tally charts, pictograms and bar charts).

 

Do keep trying to practise your timestables over the summer so that you don't become rusty. Even practising them once a week will help you to remember them, ready for Y4.

We will continue to set maths tasks on Purple Mash, which will include games, linked to the White Rose lessons and the Bitesize Daily lessons. This week's tasks also start off in a more pracical way, so please can you practise measuring the mass of household items and the capacity of liquids? We have added graph reading tasks (tally charts, pictograms and bar charts) to Purple Mash.

If you're finding it tricky to fit in lessons due to being at the hub, work commitments or concentration levels, then Corbett Maths Primary 5-a-day is a great resource as it is just 5 quick questions from all areas of the maths curriculum. This website doesn't teach the maths element but rather gives you a chance to waken your brain with a variety of questions that you should be able to solve in 5-10 minutes. You don't need to print out each page, just solve directly into the exercise book we sent home. This could be completed before you try out the White Rose lesson, or used in place of it on a busier day. Whatever you choose, it's good to keep up your maths' skills. For Y3 children we would recommend the Bronze level of challenges but, if you're finding it too easy, feel free to try the Silver level.

White Rose Maths is teaching measures capacity (volume of liquids) and graph reading (tally charts, pictograms and bar charts) in week 12. The video links to the lessons can be found by clicking on this image and the worksheets are once again attached below. 

Don't forget there are also daily lessons on BBC Bitesize which tie in with White Rose Maths. The lessons on this site will include videos, interactive tasks, downloadable worksheets and games. We are trying to provide you with a variety of sources where you can learn, so whether you follow the activities on Purple Mash, BBC Bitesize or White Rose Maths, they will all benefit your education. Pick and choose whichever format you prefer or mix and match!

 

This is the overview from White Rose Maths, one of several schemes which we use regularly in Emmaus. 

The plan shows the work that children will cover, week by week as part of their home learning scheme.

 

They have already published two weeks of White Rose Maths summer term learning on their Home Learning web page. Some of this differs a little from the BBC Bitesize plan – but only for the first two weeks. From Week 3 onwards, their plans run in line with each other.

 

This means that every day, there’s a learning video on their web page to watch and a link to that day’s BBC Bitesize page for more information and even more lesson content. You can print off the worksheet or follow it from the computer just as we would do with a text book in class. There are also answers to download separately so you can check how you're getting on!

 

Just follow these four easy steps…

1. Click on the set of lessons for your child’s year group.
2. Watch the video (either on your own if you plan to deliver the lesson, or with your child. By Y3 many of our children will begin to be able to follow these videos independently).
3. Find a calm space where your child can work for about 20-30 minutes.
4. Use the video guidance to support your child as they work through a lesson.

 

A regular daily learning routine will help your child to learn more effectively at home. We therefore recommend that you aim to cover just one 20-30 minute White Rose Maths session each day.

 

If you're finding this tricky without your usual teachers in school, feel free to go back and try the Y2 lessons. It will be good revision and it's always better to do work that is achievable than to struggle on with work that is too tricky. 

Have a look in your Purple Mash 2dos for a game I created. It's a pretty simple way to practise your tenths but I thought you might enjoy creating your own matching pairs. You can choose any theme - animals, Lego, football teams and their logos. You'll find this in your 2dos as well. Have fun! If you make a game, see if you can post it on our blog for everyone else to play. See my instructions there.

This doesn't actually need to be done at 10am so don't panic if you're late to the party! 

 

They're working on fractions at the moment; some of this we have already covered in class, some of which may be new to you.

 

Dip in and out, picking a lesson that appeals to you. You can answer the questions out loud or write them in the exercise book we gave you. 

The Maths Factor is now FREE for everyone (usually about £2 per week) to support children's’ continued learning at home for the duration of the UK Schools closure period. 

Parents can sign up and add children to their account to play lots of fun maths games. 

Measurements (length, capacity and weight) are always tricky to teach in school as it is best to work one on one with a child so they can really see the scales and understand the measures. We hope you can help with this at home.

 

Your challenge while you're away from school is to take a look at some recipes and talk about the importance of measures. If you have time it would be lovely if you could follow a recipe together and make something, savoury or sweet.

 

Please don’t panic...this doesn’t need to be a Great British Bake Off Showstopper! It could be as simple as making a sandwich and simply weighing the ingredients as you use them.

As part of our DT topic we had been researching and designing a vegetable soup which we planned to make. This was supposed to take place on Tuesday 17th March but was cancelled at the last minute by the catering company who were to deliver the lesson. We had hoped to make it ourselves this coming week. Maybe you could find a vegetable soup recipe online that you'd like to try? We tasted lots of vegetables so the children know what they might like to add to their soup. 

The children have all got a Times Tables Rock Stars account. They will have brought home their username and password.

 

Follow the link to play this on the computer, iPad, tablet or even mobile phones.  There is also an app which is free to download.

 

If the children fancy challenging one another then they can do this in real-time in the Arena. How about we suggest 11am for those who fancy playing against their classmates? If they want to set a private challenge for one of their classmates or even a teacher(!) then that can be done at any time using RockSlam. The Festival area is where they can play live against children from all around the world and can also be accessed at any time. (There is no chat functionality on this website)

This interactive hundred square can be used to count on on back with addition or subtraction. We have learned to count forwards in ones or count down in tens. It can also be used to find multiples when working on our times tables. This requires Flash so cannot be used on an iPad or tablet.
