Phonics Screening Check

The children will be sitting the Statutory Phonics Screening Check. It will take place during the week of 13-17 June 2016.

The phonics screening check is a short, simple assessment to make sure that all pupils have learned phonic decoding to an appropriate standard by the age of 6. All year 1 pupils in maintained schools, academies and free schools must complete the check.

The phonics check will help teachers identify the children who need extra help so they can receive the support they need to improve their reading skills. These children will then be able to retake the check in year 2.

The check comprises a list of 40 words and non-words which the child will read one-to-one with their class teacher.

PHONICS SCREENING CHECK  - THINGS THAT WILL HELP YOUR CHILD READ:

  • Let your child see you read and read to them
  • Tell your child about interesting things that you have read in newspapers, magazines and books.
  • Visit the local library.
  • Visit bookshops.
  • Sit with your child every night and engage with them in their reading. Please make comments in their reading record book to assist the teachers.
  • Discuss with them about what they have read in the book.
  • Ask them to retell the story.
  • Talk about interesting words and identify words or interesting phrases that they might use in their writing.
  • Occasionally ask them to write the sequence of the story and identify characters.

Below are some links to online interactive games that you can play with your child. These are games with which they will already be familiar as we use them in our phonics lessons.
