The Road to Emmaus
On the Sunday after he was crucified, two of Jesus' friends were walking along the road from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. As they were walking they were talking about Jesus. Jesus caught up with them but they didn't recognise him. Jesus asked them why they were so sad, and his friends told him about what had happened to Jesus in Jerusalem. Jesus told them that this had all been prophesised and explained it to them. They reached Emmaus late in the evening and the stranger looked as if he was going to continue walking, but the two men invited him to stay and have supper with them. When they sat down to eat, the stranger picked up the loaf of bread, broke it into pieces and gave it to the two men. Then the men knew that the stranger was Jesus. They stared at him for a moment and then he was gone.
The men were very excited. The went immediately back to Jerusalem. They soon found the disciples and told them they had seen Jesus and that they had spoken to him and he was alive.
