Grammar Resources

By the end of Year 6, children are expected to understand and be able to use the complete range of different grammar and punctuation outlined in the National Curriculum.

 

The National Curriculum for Year 6 covers:

  • Making use of the passive voice
  • Knowing the difference between the language typically used in informal speech and the language appropriate for formal speech and writing 
  • Linking ideas across paragraphs using a wider range of cohesive devices: repetition of a word or phrase, grammatical connections and ellipsis
  • Using different layout devices 
  • Using semi-colonscolons and dashes to mark the boundary between independent clauses 
  • Using colons to introduce a list and use of semi-colons within lists 
  • Using hyphens can be used to avoid ambiguity
