The Rainforest Project

For homework, year 4 were tasked to create a 3D diorama of a rainforest.

World Museum Trip

Year 4 visited the World Museum. We were archaeologists in the Anglo Saxon workshop and looked at a range of everyday artefacts and clothing. We found out interesting facts about the Rainforest which we will use in the information books that we are writing in English lessons.

Our Last Day and two more birthdays!

We went to the School's Epiphany Service 'Arise and Shine' at the Anglican cathedral.

The Dean of Liverpool, the very Reverend Dr Pete Wilcox talked to us about the word 'Epiphany' which means 'realisation' as the kings 'realised' that Jesus was God's son. He asked us to think about this and to 'realise' how important Jesus is in our lives.

We enjoyed singing carols, listening to a choir with amazing soloists and watching Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar take Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh to Jesus.

Year 4 studied the 'Snow Queen' text in the Autumn term as part of our Literacy work on 'Stories from fantasy settings' so it was lovely to watch the brilliant performance by Tempest Theatre. Here is the story and photos of the magical performance.

PART ONE

2000 years ago a troll and a wizard made an evil mirror with spirits inside and

when people looked in it, it made them look really ugly. One day, this mirror was

smashed and the pieces fell down to Earth.

2000 years later, a girl (Gerda) and her mother find two boys( Kay and his friend)

alone in the freezing cold. Kay and Gerda become friends and often play

together. One day Kay and Gerda are talking about the Snow Queen. During that

night the Snow Queen comes and when Kay comes to the window, she throws a

piece of the broken mirror into Kays’ eye. The next day Kay becomes horrible

and nasty. One day, when playing, Kay is tempted away by the Snow Queen and

taken to her ice palace. Gerda’s journey to find the ice palace and Kay begins.

With the help of a raven she escapes a witch in an enchanted garden and

continues her journey.

PART TWO

Safely away from the witch, Gerda and the raven travel to a palace where she

thinks her beloved Kay is. She bursts into a room thinking Kay is inside but it is

another boy, a prince, who is getting married. She stays with the royal family until

the day when she gets into the carriage and is driven off in search of Kay again.

The gold from the carriage attracts the robbers. The coach is stopped and

Gerda’s is ambushed. A kind robber maiden rescues her and she is taken to their

den. Gerda is allowed to take the maiden’s reindeer and Gerda once again

continues her search.

PART THREE

Gerda wakes up in the Finland lady’s hut and she leads her to the Laplander’s

igloo who is said to know the way to the Snow Queen’s palace. The Laplander

gives Gerda a magic potion and she is transported to the ice palace. Inside the

Snow Queen is waiting for her, whilst Kay lays motionless beside her a battle

commences. Through Gerda’s love for Kay, she defeats the Snow Queen and

Kay and Gerda return home safely to mother.

We enjoyed making Christingles and talking to Reverend Alastair about what each part represents. When the Christingles were lit we prayed for other people around the world. Can you remember what each part of the Christingle symbolises?

Year 4 Assembly-'Thank you Ancient Greece' Many Thanks to all the children for brilliant singing, dancing and acting. Thank you to our parents for all the lovely costumes.

Our new history topic is Crime and Punishment. Robbie the Bobby came to talk to us about crimes which we have today and how we detect and prevent crime. We found his talk very interesting.

Year 4 have been working very hard to learn multiplication facts. We enjoyed playing a game to practise our times tables and related division facts. One player said a calculation from the game board and another player had to say the answer before 5 seconds was up on the timer. The first player to get 4 of their colour counters on the game board won. Keep practising your tables at home children.

Year 4 visit World Museum and Walker Art Gallery. Two retired teachers comment on the wonderful behaviour of the children. Well done Year 4.

We loved listening to Chris tell us the story of Atlanta and Meleager. We were very good at saying how we knew the two people in the foreground of the picture were the main characters. We talked about the artist's use of colours, light, size..... Atlanta was known for her beauty and bravery and Meleager is a Greek hero. We found out that they had been hunting a boar and could tell Chris all the clues in the painting which suggested this. We found out that Meleager gave the boar's head to Atlanta but others were not happy. We loved the ending of the Greek myth but had a go at thinking of an alternative ending. We acted our imaginative scenes out.

On the way to our Greek storytelling session, Chris showed us a very special painting. We recognised the shells in the corner of the gold frame and knew that the same shell is on our uniform. We loved the 'Supper at Emmaus' art.

Artists have loved painting pictures and creating sculptures about Greek myths. We spent some time appreciating the beautiful art in the Walker Art Gallery.

Girls play Medusa Game!

Dressing up as the 12 Greek Gods who lived on Mount Olympus

Arrival and settling in to listen in the World Museum.

Our R.E topic was 'People' We looked at our own family trees and then the family of God. In one lesson, we learnt about the wise man Solomon and how he made the right decisions. We looked at a range of dilemmas and talked in our groups about what would be the wise 'thing' to do. We acted the scenarios out and discussed 'right' and 'wrong'
We loved creating our Ancient Greek pots with Ms Blair. We know that we can find out a lot about this Ancient civilisation from looking at their pottery.

Year 4 have been creating peaceful landscape pictures using watercolours.
