We enjoy developing our mathematical skills and understanding through a wide range of activities indoors and outdoors.
We are learning to reliably count 10 plus objects, using one to one correspondence. We have fun chalking and jumping on numbers outdoors. We play with the giant dice and are learning to recognise the spot patterns up to 6, without counting. Numicon patterns help us to understand number bonds to 5 and beyond. We sort objects according to colour, shape or type (e.g. a set of vehicles, dinosaurs or animals).
We are learning to match and recognise numerals through games like Hook a Duck, simple hop scotch and matching numbered cars to the corresponding parking spaces. In the water play we order numerals and count (e.g. Five Speckled Frogs). We also develop our concepts of capacity, floating and sinking.
We have been using a bucket balance and natural objects to explore early concepts of weight. We compare a variety of fir cones, conkers, leaves and pumpkins to help us understand the concept of size.
It's great to construct using 2D and 3D shapes with our friends. The large scale construction outdoors helps to develop our awareness of shape and space.
We have been sequencing bobbins, beads and numbers to help develop early IT skills too.
