Please return all school reading books as we now need to tidy and sort our school libraries. Every year we lose so many books and it is a real drain on the school budget as we need to replace them. Please help us by having a hunt at home and returning any that you find, no matter how long you think you may have had them. We won't be cross! We're having an book amnesty!
The temperatures have been soaring and, while this may feel lovely at home with a BBQ and the paddling pool, it can be extremely warm in school! Please could you provide a bottle of water for your child every day? They do have access to a water fountain but there is only one for the whole of KS2 so queues can be very long! Please bring a cap and can sun cream be applied each morning too? Some children bring some to reapply at lunchtime and this can be a good idea if you cannot find one which lasts for several hours. We will continue to remind the children to wear their caps and to drink plenty of water throughout the day.Musical Performances as part of Arts Week

Chester Trip - The Dewa Experience
We will be visiting Chester for the Dewa Roman Experience on Monday 14th May. Please wear school uniform and comfortable shoes as we will be walking around some of the city as part of this experience. Trainers would be ideal. A waterproof coat is also essential as the walk will take place, regardless of the weather! Finally, please bring a packed lunch in a disposable bag.
We now have a book swap box in each of our Y3 classrooms. Please feel free to bring in an old book or two (in good condition) to swap for a new one that takes your fancy!
Maisie Cameron-Campbell, who is one of our Year 3 pupils, is supporting the Little Princess Trust by getting her hair cut to provide real hair wigs for children suffering with hair loss due to cancer treatment. What a courageous and caring young lady she is, we are very proud of her.

In assembly this morning we heard about the Science Ambassadors' latest experiment: Egg Shell Geodes. It sounded really exciting and a few people asked if they could try this at home. If this is something you fancy then you'll find the instructions on this website. As part of our topic on the Ascension and Pentecost, the children hot-seated some of the apostles and found out more about how they would have felt when Jesus returned to His Father. They made Ascension cups to show Jesus rising on a cloud. The children recognised the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and thought about the power of fire and wind. They made windmills which were covered with words of energy.
We have started a two week block on statistics in maths. We will look at interpreting and presenting data using bar charts, pictograms and tables. This website allows you to create your own pictograms with ease and is lots of fun when collecting data in a pictoral fashion.

Holiday homework is to do some research on New York State (not New York City!) and complete the travel brochure to advertise one of the cities or regions in New York State. Examples of areas you could choose include the Adirondack Mountains, Hudson Valley, Albany or Long Island.

Police Horse Visit
Today we had a visit from the mounted section of the Merseyside Police and, more importantly, Bo and Arnie! They are two Clydesdale horses and they were huge yet very well behaved! It was interesting to hear about their role within the Police Force and within our community. If you see them out and about please stop them to say hello, they're looking forward to meeting you!
This is a great little reminder about 2D shapes and their properties - we'll be covering these once again this week. It asks for your name and the name of your fish - I advise that you just put in your initial or your favourite animal as your name. There's really no need for it to be your real name. We have been learning about putting personal details onto the internet and that this is not a good idea. I have checked this site though and think it's a great game. Sadly it requires flash so won't work on tablets, sorry.
Our Easter / Spring Art Competition is to be held next week. There is a lovely prize for the winning piece of artwork for each class. It can be a spring picture, Easter card, bonnet, basket, sculpture or painting. We are looking forward to seeing these! Use Pattern Shapes to explore geometry and fractions, create your own designs, or try filling in outlines. As you work with shapes, you can think about horizontal and vertical lines, parallel and perpendicular lines, angles - right, acute and obtuse, and investigate symmetry. 
Symmetry Matching is a tablet friendly maths game which involves mirroring an image along a line of symmetry. Options include pictures, shapes and randomly generated patterns which are the most difficult. 
Can you recognise the nouns? Pop all the balloons which contain a noun. This needs flash so will not work on tablets, sorry.

Maths homework
To practise telling the time on analogue and digital clocks. Get family members and friends to ask you the time this week at different points throughout the day. What time will it be in 2 hours? What time was it half an hour ago? Play the time games on the class website page.
We are practising reading the time using both analogue and digital clocks. This is a lovely interactive resource but it does require Flash so cannot be used on a tablet. Sorry.
A game to challenge your time telling skills. I expect all of Y3 to be able to complete level 3 with ease and to be working at level 4. We haven't started reading time to the nearest minute but if you fancy trying it then challenge yourself with level 5. Sorry, this is not a tablet friendly game.
All of you are very capable of the basic level on this game. Medium is reading time to the nearest 5 minutes and we are working at this at the moment. Some of you are ready for advanced which means you will read time to the nearest minute. If you are up for a challenge then try that level but be warned...it's tricky! The children have now all got a Times Tables Rock Stars account! They will be bringing home their username and password so they can access this from home.
World famous rock musicians are the best at what they do because they've spent hours practising guitar chords, writing music or playing on the drums. It's just the same with times tables – all Times Table Rock Stars need to practise and practise and practise.

Last term Luke enjoyed coding using MIT's Scratch programme so much that he continued his work at home. He has programmed a car sprite to respond to his keyboard - to speed up and slow down and to turn left/right. Sadly Mrs Buckland and Mrs Gaied proved to be very poor drivers so we had to get Luke to demonstrate his app in action! Take a look at the video and prepare to be impressed. Great work Luke!

Take on the role of post master. Correctly measure the length of the parcel and its weight before deciding on the correct postage stamp. This games requires Flash and cannot be played on a tablet, sorry.

The theme this year was "Read the book...watch the film!" and in Y3 we chose to read The Wizard of Oz. The children liked the book but said they loved the film! We learnt about the supposed faults of the characters then learnt about their strengths and this really helped us to improve our use of adjectives in our writing.
We enjoyed imagining where we would travel if we had our own pair of ruby slippers!
As always, the book fair was a big success with many children buying books and others finding titles that they would like for Christmas.
A visiting theatre company performed The Wind in the Willows for us which was lovely to watch.
Probably our favourite activity was reading to children from the Recpetion classes. We were able to work on all our fluency and expression that we have been practising in uided Reading lessons in class in order to make the stories as interesting as possible. we also made lots of new friends today!

We've spent time working on place value this half term. Here's a nice way to consolidate your knowledge of hundreds, tens and ones. By now you can all work with the hardest questions - numbers up to 999. This game works on iPads and mobiles Beware - if you answer incorrectly then the shark will take a nibble of your boat!
We will be continuing to work with subtraction after the half term. See if you can speed up your knowledge of your subtraction number facts with this subtraction grid. Challenge yourself to play more tricky levels as you improve! This game works on tablets and mobile phones 
We will begin work on addition using the columnar method. This is not a game but shows you how we will set out our work and, most importantly, explains it for parents using the new wording of Hundreds, Tens and ONES. If our mathematical vocabulary can be reinforced at home then the children's learning will really come on in leaps and bounds.Judaism Week

The children have now been sorted into their school houses. They will stay in these houses for the remainder of their time at Emmaus and will work to earn house points, in their sporting and academic endeavours and through kind and thoughtful behaviour. These will also be the teams that they represent on sports day and in the inter-house football and cross country events that take place throughout the year.
