Dates for your Diary:

School closes for summer holidays on Tuesday 24th July at 1.30pm

INSET day on Monday 3rd September

Back to School on Tuesday 4th September

Please return all school reading books as we now need to tidy and sort our school libraries. Every year we lose so many books and it is a real drain on the school budget as we need to replace them. Please help us by having a hunt at home and returning any that you find, no matter how long you think you may have had them. We won't be cross! We're having an book amnesty!
The temperatures have been soaring and, while this may feel lovely at home with a BBQ and the paddling pool, it can be extremely warm in school! Please could you provide a bottle of water for your child every day? They do have access to a water fountain but there is only one for the whole of KS2 so queues can be very long! Please bring a  cap and can sun cream be applied each morning too? Some children bring some to reapply at lunchtime and this can be a good idea if you cannot find one which lasts for several hours. We will continue to remind the children to wear their caps and to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Musical Performances as part of Arts Week

Maths Party Day!

As part of Liverpool Maths Party Day we completed maths challenges linked to the World Cup, played mathematical games and drew mathematical shape pictures. We had a brilliant morning!
You'll be amazed when you see what our Y3 pupils can do! We have been finding fractions of a number....and not just ½ or ¼ but much trickier ones too. Click on the image to follow the link to the game.

Reading to Nursery children

We raised £240 with this School Council arranged event. The pupils wanted to raise money towards new playground equipment and 'wet play' toys. Eight members of staff were willing victims and the children found the whole spectacle hilarious!
We have started using the bus stop or short division method in maths. This is a quick and efficient method for working out division with larger numbers. Have a try at this game and test your division skills with the three levels of difficulty. This game requires Flash Player, sorry.
The children made Roman shields for homework and we used them to re-enact the Roman soldiers marching. We recreated the wedge formation and the tortoise whilst under attack from the opposite class. We're sure this will definitely be a memorable event from their time in Year 3!

Year 3 had a fantastic day preparing for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding. We made collage Union flags and solved royal wedding puzzles. In the afternoon we went outside and enjoyed a sunny 'street party' which included cake decorating, face painting and friendship bracelet making. It was brilliant fun!
We wrote our own versions of The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister and illustrated them too. It was great fun to read them to the children in Reception and to practise using expression.
What a fabulous day! The sun shone down as we explored the city of Chester and uncovered some Roman relics! Many thanks to our parent helpers - without you, trips like this cannot happen.
We will be visiting Chester for the Dewa Roman Experience on Monday 14th May. Please wear school uniform and comfortable shoes as we will be walking around some of the city as part of this experience. Trainers would be ideal. A waterproof coat is also essential as the walk will take place, regardless of the weather! Finally, please bring a packed lunch in a disposable bag.
We now have a book swap box in each of our Y3 classrooms. Please feel free to bring in an old book or two (in good condition) to swap for a new one that takes your fancy!

Maisie Cameron-Campbell, who is one of our Year 3 pupils, is supporting the Little Princess Trust by getting her hair cut to provide real hair wigs for children suffering with hair loss due to cancer treatment. What a courageous and caring young lady she is, we are very proud of her.
If you would like to show your support for her you can donate at JustGiving.com or contact her Mum on Facebook (Karen Campbell).

Good luck for the 11th May Maisie and well done on your courage and thoughtfulness for others, what lovely qualities to have.

In assembly this morning we heard about the Science Ambassadors' latest experiment: Egg Shell Geodes. It sounded really exciting and a few people asked if they could try this at home. If this is something you fancy then you'll find the instructions on this website. Please bring in the results if you'd like to share them with the class and Mrs Mackenzie.

RE: The Ascension and Pentecost

As part of our topic on the Ascension and Pentecost, the children hot-seated some of the apostles and found out more about how they would have felt when Jesus returned to His Father. They made Ascension cups to show Jesus rising on a cloud. The children recognised the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and thought about the power of fire and wind. They made windmills which were covered with words of energy.

We have started a two week block on statistics in maths. We will look at interpreting and presenting data using bar charts, pictograms and tables. This website allows you to create your own pictograms with ease and is lots of fun when collecting data in a pictoral fashion. smiley Click here to see one created in class.
A fantastic performance from the children in today's assembly. They had all worked really hard and spoke with confidence in front of so many friends and family. It was wonderful to see you all there - thank you for supporting the children with learning their words and songs.

Holiday homework is to do some research on New York State (not New York City!) and complete the travel brochure to advertise one of the cities or regions in New York State. Examples of areas you could choose include the Adirondack Mountains, Hudson Valley, Albany or Long Island.

If you need a bit of help starting out with this project then you could try these websites:

Police Horse Visit

Today we had a visit from the mounted section of the Merseyside Police and, more importantly, Bo and Arnie! They are two Clydesdale horses and they were huge yet very well behaved! It was interesting to hear about their role within the Police Force and within our community. If you see them out and about please stop them to say hello, they're looking forward to meeting you!
This is a great little reminder about 2D shapes and their properties - we'll be covering these once again this week. It asks for your name and the name of your fish - I advise that you just put in your initial or your favourite animal as your name. There's really no need for it to be your real name. We have been learning about putting personal details onto the internet and that this is not a good idea. I have checked this site though and think it's a great game. Sadly it requires flash so won't work on tablets, sorry.
Our Easter / Spring Art Competition is to be held next week. There is a lovely prize for the winning piece of artwork for each class. It can be a spring picture, Easter card, bonnet, basket, sculpture or painting. We are looking forward to seeing these! The winners will be chosen by Mrs Holmes and the Art Councillor for each class.
We visited Croxteth Park today to help plant some new trees. We went to Butterfly Field or Poor Field which is behind the ice house and set about planting a variety of trees. These included hazel, dogwood and guelder rose. Each sapling was protected by a plastic sheath to prevent the young trees being nibbled by naughty rabbits! We look forward to visiting these new trees next year to see how they've grown. We also spotted lots of signs of spring and new life: snowdrops, crocuses, primroses and daffodils. See how many you can spot when you're out and about.
Use Pattern Shapes to explore geometry and fractions, create your own designs, or try filling in outlines. As you work with shapes, you can think about horizontal and vertical lines, parallel and perpendicular lines, angles - right, acute and obtuse, and investigate symmetry. smiley
Symmetry Matching is a tablet friendly maths game which involves mirroring an image along a line of symmetry. Options include pictures, shapes and randomly generated patterns which are the most difficult. smiley

Can you recognise the nouns? Pop all the balloons which contain a noun. This needs flash so will not work on tablets, sorry.

So now that you can recognise nouns, can you classify them? Are they common nouns, proper nouns which need a capital letter or abstract nouns? Create your own folders and drop the nouns into the correct folder. No sign in necessary. Tablet friendly smiley

Reception's Chinese Dragon Visited Y3

Visit from Mr Housbey in his role as a Deacon

As part of our RE topic 'Listening and Sharing' we had a visit from Mr Housbey to tell us about his role in the Church as a Deacon. The children prepared questions to ask him about his job serving the Church. It was wonderful to see some of the things he brought in and Lucas looked fabulous dressed in robes!

Maths homework

To practise telling the time on analogue and digital clocks. Get family members and friends to ask you the time this week at different points throughout the day. What time will it be in 2 hours? What time was it half an hour ago? Play the time games on the class website page.

We are practising reading the time using both analogue and digital clocks. This is a lovely interactive resource but it does require Flash so cannot be used on a tablet. Sorry.
A game to challenge your time telling skills. I expect all of Y3 to be able to complete level 3 with ease and to be working at level 4. We haven't started reading time to the nearest minute but if you fancy trying it then challenge yourself with level 5. Sorry, this is not a tablet friendly game.
All of you are very capable of the basic level on this game. Medium is reading time to the nearest 5 minutes and we are working at this at the moment. Some of you are ready for advanced which means you will read time to the nearest minute. If you are up for a challenge then try that level but be warned...it's tricky! Tablet friendly smiley

Visit from the Chief Constable

As we prepare for Safer Internet Day next Tuesday on 6th February, test out your knowledge with this quiz and let us know how many you get right!
As part of the children's swimming lessons at Ellergreen swimming pool, the children have been taking part in water safety activities. This week they had to wear their pyjamas in the swimming pool!
This is a PowerPoint slideshow that will remind the children how to calculate the perimeter or rectilinear shapes as we have been doing in class.

The children have now all got a Times Tables Rock Stars account! They will be bringing home their username and password so they can access this from home.

World famous rock musicians are the best at what they do because they've spent hours practising guitar chords, writing music or playing on the drums. It's just the same with times tables – all Times Table Rock Stars need to practise and practise and practise.

Follow the link to play this on the computer, iPad, tablet or even mobile phones. smiley There is also an app which is free to download from Apple or Android.

Click on the image to follow a link to the new BBC Super Movers website pages. Its aim is to get children moving and there are lots of curriculum-linked song and movement routines designed to be used in the classroom or by all the family at home.

This song is perfect for our current mathematical topic - measurement. Have a try!

Last term Luke enjoyed coding using MIT's Scratch programme so much that he continued his work at home. He has programmed a car sprite to respond to his keyboard - to speed up and slow down and to turn left/right. Sadly Mrs Buckland and Mrs Gaied proved to be very poor drivers so we had to get Luke to demonstrate his app in action! Take a look at the video and prepare to be impressed. Great work Luke!

Take on the role of post master. Correctly measure the length of the parcel and its weight before deciding on the correct postage stamp. This games requires Flash and cannot be played on a tablet, sorry.
Play 'Mostly Postie' and weigh the different parcels. Start easy with whole and half kilograms but we expect all of you to be able to weigh more accurately in grams too. Try all three levels. Not tablet-friendly, sorry.
Test yourself as we look at capacity and taking measures. Which tools will you use and which units do we need?
Can you order these coconuts in different measures? Today we looked at ordering ml and l but you could try prices or length to test yourself! This game will work on iPads and tablets too smiley
We have now started learning about fractions in maths and have enjoyed identifying tenths as quickly as possible. This game can be played on a tablet too smiley
Practise your times tables against a family member or friend with this table tennis game. This works on iPads and mobile phones too smiley Watch out for the 'fast return' element of this game. It makes it really tricky! click on multiple balls to be tested on more than one times table.

BOOK WEEK

The theme this year was "Read the book...watch the film!" and in Y3 we chose to read The Wizard of Oz. The children liked the book but said they loved the film! We learnt about the supposed faults of the characters then learnt about their strengths and this really helped us to improve our use of adjectives in our writing.

We enjoyed imagining where we would travel if we had our own pair of ruby slippers!

As always, the book fair was a big success with many children buying books and others finding titles that they would like for Christmas.

A visiting theatre company performed The Wind in the Willows for us which was lovely to watch.

Probably our favourite activity was reading to children from the Recpetion classes. We were able to work on all our fluency and expression that we have been practising in uided Reading lessons in class in order to make the stories as interesting as possible. we also made lots of new friends today!

The Wind in the Willows

Yet again Emmaus families have proved to be extremely generous and compassionate in thinking of others who, this Christmas, will not receive any gifts. We supported Operation Christmas Child by bringing in shoe boxes filled with presents for children aged 2-14 years. Class 3CB helped the School Council to carry these boxes to the van which transported them on the first leg of their journey, to the OCC warehouse in Speke. On Wednesday the School Council will visit the warehouse and learn what happens to boxes after they leave our school. Aimee and Alex from Y3 are looking forward to helping out!
We've spent time working on place value this half term. Here's a nice way to consolidate your knowledge of hundreds, tens and ones. By now you can all work with the hardest questions - numbers up to 999. This game works on iPads and mobiles smiley Beware - if you answer incorrectly then the shark will take a nibble of your boat!
We will be continuing to work with subtraction after the half term. See if you can speed up your knowledge of your subtraction number facts with this subtraction grid. Challenge yourself to play more tricky levels as you improve! This game works on tablets and mobile phones smiley
We will begin work on addition using the columnar method. This is not a game but shows you how we will set out our work and, most importantly, explains it for parents using the new wording of Hundreds, Tens and ONES. If our mathematical vocabulary can be reinforced at home then the children's learning will really come on in leaps and bounds.
This week we have been learning about one of the major world religion: Judaism. We have taken a virtual tour of a synagogue using Google Cardboard, designed our own synagogues, made a menorah, composed questions to ask our Jewish visitors and celebrated Shabbat with them. What a wonderful experience! We experienced what would happen in a Jewish home on their Sabbath day and sampled some challah, the plaited loaf of bread eaten on this special day. We also had a glass of wine (grape juice) and listened to the blessings in Hebrew. The Sharabi family kindly gave up their time to come in to Emmaus to teach us about their faith. Mrs Buckland and Mrs Edwards were especially grateful as the Y3 children asked such thoughtful and probing questions which our visitors were able to answer with knowledge and experience. It was a really insightful day.

The children worked in pairs and moved around the hall to tackle a number of mathematical challenges, discussing them and solving them using teamwork. They had a wonderful time and were supported by a lot of puzzled and perplexed parents who found the tasks rather tricky! It's a good job your children are so clever! Thank you so much to all the volunteers and please don't worry if you were unable to help.
Find out your Horrid Henry name here and check out the jokes!
We have been practising our number bonds to 10 and to 20 this week. The children enjoyed playing this game to test themselves and to improve their speed of recall. Have a try at home - this game works on tablets, mobile phones and computers. Click on the green circle to start then select make 10, make 20 or, if you feel like a challenge, make 100! smiley

Start of Y3 photograph!

The children have now been sorted into their school houses. They will stay in these houses for the remainder of their time at Emmaus and will work to earn house points, in their sporting and academic endeavours and through kind and thoughtful behaviour. These will also be the teams that they represent on sports day and in the inter-house football and cross country events that take place throughout the year.
