Please find information below about your child's reading journey. We have 4 RWI groups.
The groups are led by: Mrs Gaied, Miss Kelly/Mrs Millington, Mrs Wright and Mrs Ball. Your child will know who their phonics teacher is. Stickers will be placed on their reading wallets too. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to come and speak with us.
Mrs Gaied’s Group: They are learning to read ditties. Ditties are sheets with simple sentences on. The children know all of their Set 1 ‘special friends’ sounds, sounds that have 2 letters that make 1 sound. They are practising reading and writing with these sounds.

Miss Kelly/Mrs Millington’s Group: The children will be reading the first set of RWI books. The books are called red books and each book contains 3 short ‘ditties’. Children will also be reading words that can not be sounded out with Fred Talk – red words. You can see how we teach these on the clip below. There is a page at the back of the book with speedy words, these are words we read every day and aim to eventually recognise within 2 seconds.
Please bring their wallets in every day as we will swap the books when your child has read each ditty. Children will read and write words with their Set 1 sounds: th, sh, ch, ng, nk, qu, ck. We learn to read longer words before we learn new sounds, so we will read words with 3, 4 and 5 sounds in them. There is a page at the back of the book with speedy words, these are words we read every day and aim to eventually recognise within 2 seconds. Children will also be reading words that can not be sounded out with Fred Talk – red words. You can see how we teach these on the clip below.
This group will be reading the book one day and writing about it the next day. We aim to help the children to confidently spell words, use fingers spaces and place each letter on the line.
