Pumpkin Fun
Linking with our Giant Spectacular theme we have been exploring the concepts of big and little, large and small using Autumn leaves and fruit. The children had great fun comparing the relative weights of the large and small pumpkins. They enjoyed testing out the strength of the pumpkin skin by hammering and sawing using play tools. The children rolled the pumpkins to one another and also compared their sizes with other Autumn fruit like conkers and fir cones. The children collected big and small leaves too. Brodie found the largest leaf of all.
A variety of vocabulary to describe the inside of the pumpkins was suggested by the children, including Oscar commenting that it looked 'like spider webs' and a few children say the seeds felt 'slimy.' Adjectives such as enormous, gigantic, huge, teeny, tiny, small and smallest were used during circle time.
The children loved using safety knives to chop up the pumpkin to make roast pumpkin soup. Many children enjoyed the soup and helped themselves to seconds!
