LO: To explore Mayan science and technology, and to reach a judgement about how advanced Maya society was.
Over two thousand years ago, the ancient Maya developed one of the most advanced civilizations in the Americas.
Here are just a few of the things that the Maya invented:
- The number system - Mathematics
- Maya calendar
- Irrigation system – reservoir system
- Horse collar
- Jewellery
- Tumpline – a carrying device on their backs
- Astronomy
- Chocolate
- Law and Order
- Ball courts

Use internet websites to research different Maya inventions of your own choice.
Task 1: Make a booklet researching at least 6 things that the Maya invented. Please select important information and describe each invention in detail.
Task 2: Use your findings in your booklet to answer the following question in detailed form, drawing upon the evidence to draw a historical interpretation:
‘Just how advanced were the Maya?’
Extension questions: How have the Maya impacted us today? What inventions do we have now that the Maya invented? What has the global impact of the Maya been?
