Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce.
Read Chapter 18 of Tom's Midnight Garden and look again at the end of Episode 4 of the BBC version that you watched yesterday.
This chapter ends with Tom being 'stuck' in the past.
He utters the words, "I shall never get back."
Task
Imagine that you are Tom. You have just visited Hatty at her bedside after her fall out of the tree.
You leave Hatty to return to Aunt Gwen and Uncle Alan's flat in the grand house, saying, "I shall see you tomorrow." Only you find that you can't return to the present day through the door as you usually do.
Write a detailed first-person account of what happens next.
What are your thoughts? What are your feelings? How do you react? What do you do?
Remember to write with quality and use a range of sentence structures, lengths and styles.

- Relative clauses
- Interesting openers
- Conjunctions
- Adventurous vocabulary
- Adjectives
- Adverbs
