Gung Hei Fat Choy
2019 The Year Of The Pig
The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year and taking part in celebrations at nursery. We chopped up vegetables to make Chinese stir fry and ate it using chopsticks for snack! The children developed their hand eye coordination skills, cutting and joining techniques while making lanterns for the role-play restaurant.
In the Chinese restaurant children ordered food, make deliveries, took orders over the phone, cooked and served up meals for their friends. Some enjoyed browsing through Chinese cookbooks and Chinese newspapers.
The children loved dressing up and using scalfs to dance like dragons and snakes in the hall. We listened to the story of Chinese New Year, we talked about the story of the animals race and how the tricky rat climbed on the ox' head to cross the river first. We replicated the race with animals in the sand. Some children make models of Chinese dragons out of blocks, Lego, play dough and Mobilo construction kits.
The children made red lucky envelopes, writing their names in gold: they will take their envelopes home with chocolate coins inside to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Fen Fen visited and talked about Chinese New Year stories, the animal race across the river, the Jade Emporer and told us that Chinese New Year lasts for 15 days. We learnt that savory Chinese dumplings are traditional at the beginning of Chinese New Year and sweet dumplings are eaten at the end when there is a lantern festival. We danced with fans with Fen Fen.
We used chopsticks again to eat prawn crackers, spring rolls and prawn toast! Charlotte had been practising at home and was very good! The children dressed up in their own clothes in the lucky colours of red/gold/yellow Click on the subpages below to see the photos and one minute video clips.
Thank you to all the parents and carers who went to the Liverpool Chinese New Year celebrations and emailed photos for us to look at together on the Cleverboard.
We loved singing the Chinese New Year song with actions. Click on the link below to sing along with your child!
